An add-on is any kind of additional hardware that attaches to the source console. They typically cannot be used separately from the system its made to be a supplement to (for example, the Sega CD cannot be used on its own and must be attached to a compatible Sega Genesis, even though it requires a separate own power cable in addition to being attached to the base unit, the Genesis), although some hardware variations of the base unit can include an add-on's functionality built-in (e.g. the CDX, and both versions of the Wondermega; both are Sega Genesis systems with a built-in CD drive that can play Sega CD games). The following is a list of add-ons:
