The PlayStation (Japanese: プレイステーション, officially abbreviated as PS; sometimes referred to as PS1 or unofficially as the PSX to maintain the three-character identifier common to the PS2, PS3 and PSP) is a 32-bit video game console first released by Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan on December 3, 1994, with Western releases from September 1995. The PlayStation was the first of the PlayStation series of consoles and handheld game devices.

The Sony Playstation has many differing models, with 31 differing consumer versions, and 14 special models for creating games, usually given to developers to make games with.

The PSone is a different, more compact model of the original Playstation, and went on the consumer market on July 7th, 2000. This model had lost the original parallel I/O ports, and changed the internal layout to nullify existing modchips.
