Microsoft is a software and hardware company largely known for its operating systems DOS and Windows. Microsoft entered the gaming console market with the Xbox during the 6th generation, competing with the PS2 and Gamecube. While lagging behind the dominance of the PS2 in terms of market share, and lacking the built-in fanbase the Nintendo Gamecube had, the Xbox managed to establish Microsoft as a serious player within the home console market that continues to this day.
